Overview

As a New Media Intern at SAP Green Team through a co-op program, I worked on various sustainability-focused projects, designing digital and print media to enhance environmental awareness.

My role spanned content creation, video production, and branding, event corporate sustainability initiatives while refining my skills in digital storytelling and visual communication.

Projects

Vancouver Green Day

Vancouver Green Day is an SAP-led environmental initiative that removes English Ivy, an invasive species harming Stanley Park's ecosystem.

As a New Media Intern, I filmed volunteers in action, conducted interviews, and edited a video using Premiere Pro to document the restoration effort and SAP's commitment to Sustainability.

Sustainability Fair

Vancouver Sustainability Fair raises environmental awareness while supporting Indigenous vendors and women-led businesses.

I designed an eco-themed crossword puzzle, integrating vendor research, product analysis, and SAP sustainability goals with broader environmental themes. Aligning corporate messaging with sustainability education required multiple refinements to ensure clarity and engagment.

To further highlight vendor contributions, I created a post-event video using Canva and Premiere Pro, integrating captions and visuals to communicate the environmental and social impact of their products.

This project strengthened my ability to create research-driven, engaging visual content that effectively delivers sustainability messaging.

SAP Waste management

For SAP's waste management awareness project, I designed informational materials to promote responsible disposal and recycling practices among employees.

The visuals simplified waste sorting guidelines and highlighted the environmental impact of waste reduction. This project strengthened my ability to create clear, engaging educational content aligned with sustainability goals.

I redesigned SAP’s waste sorting guide to improve clarity and usability based on real-world user behaviour. By observing employees at waste stations, I discovered that while most were familiar with sorting, they struggled with identifying prohibited items. The previous guide emphasized the ‘Accepted’ section, but I reversed this approach, making the ‘Not Accepted’ section larger and more visually prominent to reduce common sorting mistakes.

To further enhance usability, I refined colour coding, structured layouts, and icon clarity, ensuring quick and intuitive decision-making. This project challenged me to think beyond aesthetics, using user research and problem-solving to design an effective educational tool. Through this experience, I strengthened my ability to analyze user behavior, apply strategic design decisions, and create visuals that drive real-world impact

I designed a lid insert system that aligns with circular bin openings, making waste sorting more intuitive and error-free. Placing the guide directly on disposal areas helps employees quickly identify the correct bin, improving efficiency and user experience.

Reflection

This project taught me that design is not just about visuals but about solving real problems. Observing employees at waste stations, I saw that highlighting ‘Not Accepted’ items made sorting more intuitive, reinforcing the value of user-centered design.

I also gained hands-on experience in collaborating with managers and fellow designers, refining my ability to take feedback and align designs with both business goals and user needs. Beyond static visuals, I worked on video editing and internal communications, expanding my understanding of how design shapes corporate messaging.

This internship helped me develop research-driven design thinking, strategic decision-making, and real-world problem-solving skills, preparing me to work effectively in a professional setting.
